The week of June 5th is a celebration of Hemp History and we are celebrating history by making history! Working with NoLi CDC, Kentucky Hemp Industries Association, American Lime Technology and Alembic Studios we will be testing a market for hemp’s by-product, the stalk’s core (aka hurd), by building a hempcrete home and testing the energy efficiency in the home. It will also be (to the best of our knowledge) Kentucky’s first hempcrete home built from Kentucky-grown hemp!
Hempcrete homes use the core material, which makes up nearly 70% of the plant’s biomass, as an insulation material. The core is mixed with hydrated and hydraulic lime and is compressed between a timber frame and removable formwork. Hempcrete is a popular building technique in Europe and Asheville, North Carolina (home of Alembic Studios).
Hempcrete homes are touted for their energy efficiency; however, real data analyzing thermodynamics (particularly how thermal mass and moisture move through the walls) is not available. This data is essential for legitimizing the building product as a green building material, which will provide further advancements in innovation and product demand.
We are currently raising funding for thermodynamic meters to install in the home so that we can measure the energy performance over a year. We need to raise $6,480.00 for the meters. We have raised $3,500.00 so far with a special thank you to Hinkle Environmental Services and Hinkle Block and Masonry. But we need more funds to complete the project! You can make a donation today on our crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo Generosity.
But wait! There’s more!
Because hempcrete building is so new, we are also collaborating to host a hempcrete building workshop for the house. This 2-day hands-on workshop will take place on June 9th and June 10th and is a great way to learn how to use the material. After the workshop we will walk across the street to Rock House Brewing for a post-workshop celebration with their hemp ale, Uncle Jon’s Brown! To sign up for the event please visit Eventbrite. Sign up soon! Space is limited!
We hope to see you there!
